” Notes:international tiger day, observed on 29 july since 2010, raises public awareness about threats faced by tigers due to illegal hunting and habitat destruction. the day originated from an international summit in st. petersburg, russia, in 2010, attended by 13 countries with significant tiger populations, including india. the summit aimed to address the dwindling tiger population caused by human encroachment and launched the tx2 goal to double the number of wild tigers by 2022. the 2024 theme, “call for action,” emphasizes the need for global efforts to save endangered tigers. the first tiger day was observed on 29 july 2010.”

” Notes:the host sri lankan women’s cricket team won their maiden women’s cricket asia cup, upsetting the defending champion indian team. in the final of the 9th women’s cricket asia cup, held on 28 july 2024 at rangiri dambulla international stadium in dambulla, sri lanka, the hosts defeated india by 8 wickets with 8 balls to spare. sri lanka became the third team to win the women’s cricket asia cup, after india (seven times) and bangladesh (once). all matches were played in dambulla. in the semi-finals, india defeated bangladesh, and sri lanka beat pakistan to reach the finals.”

” Notes:during his visit to vientiane, laos, from 25 to 27 july 2024, external affairs minister s. jaishankar unveiled the first postage stamp of ram lalla of ayodhya. the event took place during asean-related foreign minister meetings. jaishankar, alongside laos deputy prime minister and foreign minister saleumxay kommasith, released two sets of stamps themed “celebrating the shared cultural heritage of lao pdr and india.” one stamp depicted ram lalla’s idol from ayodhya, while the other commemorated lord buddha from luang prabang, laos’s ancient capital. although predominantly buddhist, laos’s culture is deeply influenced by hinduism, including the ramayana, known locally as ramakien.”

” Union minister h.d. kumaraswamy, ministry of steel launched the steel importing monitoring system (sims) 2.0 portal, a dedicated portal for providing advanced information about steel imports. he also released the 2nd volume of the book, “safety guidelines for iron and steel sector,” covering 16 processes used by the iron and steel sector. sims 2.0 was developed with contributions from the directorate general of foreign trade (dgft), bureau of indian standards (bis), and mstc limited. the guidelines aims to enhance safety and productivity in the iron and steel industry and this will also assists the industry in becoming world-class in adopting safety standards and eliminating accidents. sims was originally introduced in 2019 to provide detailed steel import data to the domestic industry.”

” Hindustan zinc limited (hzl), the world’s second-largest integrated zinc producer has launched ‘ecozen’, asia’s first low-carbon green zinc brand. it has been certified by a global sustainability consulting firm through a life cycle assessment (lca)i.ecozen has a low-carbon zinc and has a carbon footprint of less than one tonne of carbon equivalent per tonne of zinc produced.ii.it is manufactured using renewable energy, making its carbon footprint of about 75 percent lower than the global average.”

” Nita ambani, the founder of reliance foundation has been re-elected for a second term as a member of the international olympic committee (ioc) from india ahead of the paris olympics to be held from july 26 to august 11, 2024. she received 100% of the vote at the 142nd ioc session held from 22 to 24 july in paris, france. nita ambani became the first indian woman to join the ioc in 2016. reliance foundation has established the first-ever india house at the paris olympics 2024 as part of a long-term cooperation with the indian olympic association (ioa).”

” Sahitya akademi awardee father francis d’britto, a renowned marathi litterateur, environmentalist and catholic priest, passed away at the age of 81 in palghar district of maharashtra. he was born on 4th december 1942 in jeladi village in nandakhal, maharashtra. francis d’britto founded the ‘harit vasai’ movement (movement which protects the environment and small farmers from powerful land developers). he won the sahitya akademi translation prize in 2013 for “subodh bible-naya karar”, the marathi translation of the “bible: the new testment (english) religious text”. with this, he became the 2nd person to translate the holy bible to marathi after father thomas stephens (1549-1619), a britisher and 17th centrury missionary. father stephen authored ‘krista purana’, an epic poem on the life of jesus christ in a mix of marathi and konkani.”

” According to the latest united nation(un) report titled “state of food security and nutrition in the world (sofi) 2024: financing to end hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition in all its forms”, around 733 million people faced hunger in 2023, which is equivalent to 1 in 11 people (approx. 9%) globally and 1 in 5 in africa. the theme of  sofi 2024 is “financing to end hunger, food insecurity and all forms of malnutrition’’. this year theme draw attention to  achieving sustainable development goals (sdg)2 zero hunger. as per sofi 2024, india is home to 194.6 million (19.5 crore) undernourished people, which is the highest in any country in the world.the report mentioned that about 13% of the population of india suffers from chronic undernourishment. as per the report, between 713 million and 757 million people have faced hunger in 2023, which is nearly 152 million more than in 2019 when considering the midrange of 733 million.click here to read more”
