Emergence of Buddhism and Jainism

The 6th century BCE marked a period of Shramana movement in India, characterized by social and religious unrest against the rigidity of the Vedic religion. The rise of Buddhism and Jainism was a reaction against ritualistic Brahmanism, animal sacrifices, and the caste hierarchy.

Key Facts on Buddhism

* Founder: Gautama Buddha (born Siddhartha), born c. 563 BCE in Lumbini.

* Enlightenment: Attained at age 35 at Bodh Gaya under a Pipal tree (Bodhi tree).

* First Sermon: Delivered at Sarnath (Dharmachakra-pravartana).

* Death (Mahaparinirvana): Occurred at Kushinagar in 483 BCE.

* Core Philosophy: The Four Noble Truths (Life is sorrow, cause is desire, cessation of desire is nirvana, follow the Eightfold Path) and Middle Path.
