Gandhi delivered the 'Do or Die' (Karo ya Maro) speech at Gowalia Tank Maidan, Bombay, on August 8, 1942, where the AICC passed the Quit India Resolution. The next day (August 9), Gandhi and other Congress leaders were arrested. The ground is now renamed 'August Kranti Maidan' (August Revolution Ground) in memory of this event.

The Prime Minister of India hoists the national flag at the Red Fort (Lal Qila), Delhi, on Independence Day (August 15). The President hoists the flag on Republic Day (January 26) at Kartavya Path. The first Independence Day was celebrated on August 15, 1947, when Jawaharlal Nehru (as PM) hoisted the flag at India Gate.

National Handloom Day (August 7) marks the Swadeshi Movement, which was formally launched on August 7, 1905, at the Calcutta Town Hall in response to the Partition of Bengal. The movement called for boycotting British goods and promoting Indian-made products, especially handlooms. Major Dhyan Chand (born August 29, 1905) was a legendary Indian field hockey player known as the 'Wizard of Hockey' or 'The Magician.' He represented India in three Olympics (1928, 1932, 1936), winning gold medals each time. It is said that Adolf Hitler offered him German citizenship after watching him play, which he declined. Rajiv Gandhi was the youngest PM of India (age 40) and launched India's IT and telecom revolution.

The Bharat Scouts and Guides was formed in 1950 by merging various scouting organizations (that had been active since the 1920s) into a unified body after independence. The first All India Scout Association was established in 1928 at the initiative of Annie Besant. Rajasthan's Jaipur Teej festival is famous for its processions.

Bal Gangadhar Tilak transformed Ganesh Chaturthi from a private family festival into a grand public event in 1893 in Pune, Maharashtra, as a platform to bring communities together and build anti-British sentiment. The 10-day festival with community celebrations (sarvajanik Ganesh puja) became a vehicle for nationalist activities and social reform. Mumbai's Lalbaugcha Raja is the most famous Ganesh idol.

Abhinav Bindra won India's first individual Olympic gold medal at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 10m Air Rifle event on August 11, 2008. Two frequently cited precedents for Raksha Bandhan are: (1) The Mahabharata — Draupadi tore a strip from her sari to bandage Krishna's wounded finger, and he pledged to protect her honour; (2) The historical account of Queen Karnavati of Mewar sending a rakhi to Mughal Emperor Humayun in 1535, seeking help against Bahadur Shah of Gujarat. Both are part of India's cultural fabric.

India has been one of the largest troop-contributing countries (TCCs) to United Nations Peacekeeping Operations (UNPKO) — consistently ranking among the top 3 contributors of uniformed personnel. India has contributed over 200,000 troops to more than 50 UN peacekeeping missions since 1950. Indian peacekeepers have served in Congo, South Sudan, Lebanon, and other conflict zones.

The Khilafat Movement (1919–1924) protested the dismemberment of the Ottoman Empire and the abolition of the Caliphate (Khalifat) by Western powers after World War I. Indian Muslims revered the Ottoman Sultan as the Caliph of Islam. Gandhi supported the movement as an opportunity for Hindu-Muslim unity in the broader freedom struggle. The Khilafat Movement merged with the Non-Cooperation Movement (1920).
