Indian States Foundation Days

May 1 is celebrated as Maharashtra Day (Maharashtra Diwas) and Gujarat Day simultaneously. Both states were carved out of the erstwhile Bombay State on May 1, 1960, following the States Reorganisation Act and the Mahagujarat and Samyukta Maharashtra movements.

Karnataka Rajyotsava (Karnataka Formation Day) on November 1, 1956, marks the unification of all Kannada-speaking regions (from Mysore, Madras, Bombay, and Hyderabad provinces) into a single state named Mysore (renamed Karnataka in 1973).

Haryana was formed on November 1, 1966, when it was carved out of Punjab based on the recommendations of the Shah Commission. Chandigarh was made the shared capital of both Punjab and Haryana. Hindi-speaking Haryana became India's 17th state.

Goa Liberation Day on December 19 marks the end of Portuguese colonial rule over Goa in 1961 (Operation Vijay). Goa was a Portuguese colony for 451 years. Goa became a full-fledged state (the 25th state of India) on May 30, 1987 — observed as Goa Statehood Day.

Telangana Formation Day is observed on June 2, when Telangana became India's 29th state on June 2, 2014, carved out of the northeastern region of Andhra Pradesh. Hyderabad serves as the shared capital of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh for 10 years.

Manipur, Meghalaya, and Tripura all became full states on January 21, 1972, under the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971. Before this, Manipur and Tripura were Union Territories and Meghalaya was a sub-state within Assam.

Himachal Pradesh was a Union Territory before attaining full statehood on January 25, 1971. It became the 18th state of India. Himachal Day (January 25) is celebrated annually. It was the first Union Territory to be elevated to statehood.

Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram both became full states on February 20, 1987. Arunachal Pradesh was earlier a Union Territory (formerly NEFA — North East Frontier Agency). Mizoram was carved out of Assam. Both observe Foundation Day on February 20.

Nagaland became India's 16th state on December 1, 1963, following the 16-Point Agreement (1960) between the Government of India and the Naga People's Convention to resolve the Naga insurgency. Kohima was made the state capital. Nagaland Day is observed on December 1.

Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 2000, becoming India's 26th state. Raipur is its capital. Chhattisgarh was formed simultaneously with Jharkhand (from Bihar) and Uttarakhand (from Uttar Pradesh) — all three on the same day.

Jharkhand Formation Day on November 15, 2000, coincides with the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda (1875), the revered tribal freedom fighter who led the Ulgulan (Great Tumult) against British rule. November 15 is also observed as Tribal Pride Day (Janjatiya Gaurav Diwas).

Uttarakhand was carved out of the hilly regions of Uttar Pradesh on November 9, 2000, becoming India's 27th state. It was initially named Uttaranchal and renamed Uttarakhand in 2007. Dehradun is its interim capital.

Bihar Day is celebrated on March 22, commemorating Bihar's separation from Bengal Presidency on March 22, 1912, when Bihar and Orissa were formed as a separate province. Odisha was later separated from Bihar and Orissa Province in 1936.

Sikkim was an Indian Protectorate — an independent kingdom (Chogyal monarchy) under Indian suzerainty. After a referendum in 1975, it merged with India and became the 22nd state on May 16, 1975 (Sikkim Day). Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal was the last ruler.

Andhra Pradesh was formed on October 1, 1953, as the first state created on a linguistic basis after independence, following the fast-unto-death of Potti Sriramulu demanding a separate state for Telugu speakers. This also led to the States Reorganisation Commission (1953).

Rajasthan Day (Rajasthan Diwas) is celebrated on March 30 to mark the formation of the state of Rajasthan on March 30, 1949, when Maharaja Hanwant Singh of Jodhpur signed the merger agreement. It was formed by the integration of 22 princely states.

Puducherry was a French colony handed over to India on November 1, 1954 (de facto transfer), though it became a formal Union Territory in 1962. Puducherry Liberation Day is celebrated on November 1. It remains a Union Territory (not a state).

Kerala Piravi (Birth of Kerala) is celebrated on November 1, 1956, when the state of Kerala was formed by merging Travancore-Cochin state with the Malabar district of Madras State and Kasargod taluk of South Canara under the States Reorganisation Act. Malayalam-speaking people were unified into one state.

Delhi became the National Capital Territory (NCT) with its own legislative assembly under the 69th Constitutional Amendment Act, 1991, which came into effect in 1992. The NCT of Delhi is a special category — it is neither a full state nor a simple Union Territory. Delhi Day is celebrated on February 9.
